What is medical coding?
Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical codes using a classification system. Medical coding is the language used by insurance companies and healthcare providers to identify diagnosis and procedures from the medical record/chart of patients and placing the appropriate codes using the ICD 10 CM/PCS and CPT books.
Coders take medical reports from doctors, which may include a patient’s condition, the doctor’s diagnosis, a prescription, and whatever procedures the doctor or healthcare provider performed on the patient, and turn it into a set of codes, which make up the crucial part of the medical claim.
